I shot this in color a while ago and recently started playing around with B&W conversions using Topaz software. I’m really happy with the results and loving black and white these days.

Black & White Portrait

I shot this in color a while ago and yesterday decided to post it to my Instagram as a black and white image. The response has been fantastic. The more I play around with black and white conversions the more I find myself enamored with it. I used a combination of different Topaz software and Photoshop to get the results that I liked.

As I wind down my Musicians 50+ project I was finally able to shoot drummer and songwriter Jay Dee Daugherty known for his work with Patti Smith. As a member of the Patti Smith Group he has been nominated twice to the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. I’ve really enjoyed shooting black and white project after many years of primarily working in color. The trick was finding a conversion workflow that I liked. After much experimenting I found that Topaz software gave me exactly what I was looking for.

It’s been a a few weeks since my last blog as I’ve been busy making prints for the Museum of the City of New York of my 70’s NYC street photography followed by a week’s vacation.

I recently had the pleasure of shooting guitar player Carlos Alomar for my Unsung Heroes project. Carlos is best know for his collaboration with David Bowie having played on more Bowie albums than any other musician. Carlos has also collaborated with Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Simple Minds. Iggy Pop and The Pretenders. A wonderful guitar player and a wonderful man.

Creative Boom, an art, design, photography and culture website is featuring my portraits of Musicians over the age of 50. I’ve really been enjoying capturing the essence of these musicians in black and white after years of shooting primarily color. It’s taking me back to my roots.
