First Place PX3 People’s Choice Award

Narcissister!!! © Leland Bobbé

I’m very pleased to announce that my “Neo-Burlesque” Book Proposal just won a first place People’s Choice Award in the 2010 PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris in the book category. This is Narcissister!!! one of the most recent portraits from my project.

A quote from Narcissister!!!:

“I really love to confront issues through my work that are much broader than what I personally might have experienced. I bring aspects of myself, my history, my ethnic background and myself to the work. I try to portray different characters in the way an actor might. I really want to speak about universal issues for women and I feel the mask is a neutral face that enables me to be much more universal.”

Workbook Blog

The guys over at Workbook ran a really great piece about my Neo-Burlesque book project on their relatively new blog this week with a mention of my latest awards… Thanks WRKBK!

Women of 5th Ave in the Big Issue

After aCurator magazine ran a feature on my Women of 5th Avenue project, Britain’s Big Issue magazine called to ask if they could write an article about it. The Big Issue is published for homeless people to sell, keeping half the money; it’s what the magazine calls “a hand up, not a handout”.

Robin and I attended the portfolio reviews at FotoFest in Houston earlier this year showing the Neo-Burlesque project to gallerists, publishers, museum directors etc. We got great feedback from the reviewers and were spotted by CultureMap who interviewed us for their local news and culture website.

aCurator Magazine Features Women of 5th Avenue

Newly-launched aCurator magazine featured my series of women ‘of a certain age’ photographed on upper 5th Avenue in Manhattan, in the first issue. The series looks great in the full screen format and apparently the readers loved it; London’s glossy magazine The Big Issue, a publication distributed by and for the homeless, featured my series in their review of aCurator.
