Blizzard

I know this is probably one of the most photographed buildings in New York but I was out walking during the height of the blizzard last weekend and just happened to have my camera with me. This was what I saw. There was so little definition that the auto focus wouldn’t work on my Nikon and I focused this by hand barely being able to see anything. I converted to black and white and added a vignette to give it that old New York City look.

B&W Conversion

I shot this in color a while ago and recently started playing around with B&W conversions using Topaz software. I’m really happy with the results and loving black and white these days.

Black & White Portrait

I shot this in color a while ago and yesterday decided to post it to my Instagram as a black and white image. The response has been fantastic. The more I play around with black and white conversions the more I find myself enamored with it. I used a combination of different Topaz software and Photoshop to get the results that I liked.

Through The Window

This was through my window on west 28th which is directly across from a cross fit gym. Shot it in color but processed it into black and white, I think adds a nice starkness and brings the viewer directly into the subject’s face. Whenever I get a shot like this I feel lucky because in an instant she could move away from the window and the scene is gone as if it never existed.

I came upon this gentleman the other day on 28th st. between Madison and Park. Shot in color and processed using Snapseed my favorite new iPhone photo editing app.

As I wind down my Musicians 50+ project I was finally able to shoot drummer and songwriter Jay Dee Daugherty known for his work with Patti Smith. As a member of the Patti Smith Group he has been nominated twice to the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. I’ve really enjoyed shooting black and white project after many years of primarily working in color. The trick was finding a conversion workflow that I liked. After much experimenting I found that Topaz software gave me exactly what I was looking for.

Timing is everything when shooting on the street. One second later this is a completely different photo. The lack of control is exciting.

Recently I’ve started to get back to my roots began to shot some black and white street photography. This time around I’ve been using my iPhone which is always in my pocket. The great thing about it is that people are so used to seeing people staring into their phones that it’s very easy to shoot on the street and no one takes notice. This surreal image was shot on the north corner of Union Square Park at 17th Street after rain storm.
